Denmark’s King Frederik arrived in Nuuk on Wednesday to start a second visit to Greenland within a year, signaling national unity amid U.S. interest in the Arctic island. The trip follows diplomatic talks launched late last month between Greenland, Denmark and the United States to ease tensions within the NATO alliance over former U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s push to acquire the territory.<\/p>\n
The Danish prime minister said she and Greenland’s premier had a constructive meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, though Trump\u2019s desire to acquire Greenland had not changed. The visit underscores Denmark\u2019s stance of keeping Greenland aligned within its governance framework.<\/p>\n
The king wore a black customized puffer jacket bearing the Danish and Greenlandic flags on the chest. He greeted Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Parliament head Kim Kielsen on the tarmac, in a display of ceremonial ties between the realms.<\/p>\n
Frederik will visit a school and the headquarters of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command in Nuuk, as well as Royal Greenland, the island’s largest company and seafood producer. The royal family has long included Greenland in its annual schedule, often wearing traditional attire during appearances.<\/p>\n
