Uganda police denies arrest of opposition leader Bobi Wine, as Museveni presses toward re-election. The National Unity Platform had claimed an army helicopter landed at Wine’s Kampala home and took him away to an unknown destination. Police said Wine was at home and free to move.
Wine and the NUP had earlier alleged mass fraud in Thursday’s election, conducted under an internet blackout. The party also claimed Wine was effectively under house arrest. Election officials reported Museveni leading with about 72% of the vote; Wine trailed with around 24%.
As of Saturday morning, more than 90% of polling stations had been tallied. Official results continue to unfold amid clashes at opposition rallies and reports of repression. In Butambala, police and a local MP reported violence early Friday, with contested casualty figures.
