Access to the social media platform X has been restricted in Tanzania following a series of hacks targeting official accounts. On terça-feira, the police's official account was compromised, leading to the posting of false information about the president's death and explicit content. The police have distanced themselves from the posts and announced an investigation to identify the culprits.
Data from the internet monitoring organization Netblocks indicated that X became "unreachable on major internet providers" across the country shortly after the incident. Users in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital, reported difficulties accessing the site, although some in other regions managed to log in. The Minister of Information, Jerry Silaa, confirmed the hacking and assured members of parliament that the affected accounts had been secured.
Tensão Política
The restrictions on X come amid ongoing political tensions in Tanzania, particularly regarding the deportation of prominent kenyan activists. These indivíduos were barred from attending a court case involving opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faces treason charges. The president of Tanzania warned activists from Kenya against interfering in the country's affairs, stating that such actions could lead to "chaos."
On segunda-feira, several activists, including former Justice Minister Martha Karua, were deported after traveling to support Lissu. Additionally, Boniface Mwangi, another Kenyan activist, and Agather Atuhaire from Uganda were reportedly arrested by suspected military officers in Dar es Salaam, with their current whereabouts unknown. The government has vowed to take immediate action against those responsible for the unrest.
