Whiskey Myers, a Texas-based rock country band, has achieved independent success with albums like “Firewater” and “Tornillo”. Their career took a significant turn when they appeared on “Yellowstone” in 2018, catapulting them from theater acts to arena headliners.
Whiskey Myers recently released their seventh album, “Whomp Whack Thunder”, produced by Jay Joyce. This album marks a new chapter for the band, as they decided to hire a producer to alleviate the stress of self-production. The release coincides with their “What We Were Born to Do Tour”, showcasing their continuous evolution and enduring success.
The band, consisting of Cody Cannon, Cody Tate, John Jeffers, Jamey Gleaves, Jeff Hogg, and Tony Kent, has maintained a consistent lineup since their inception. Their decision to hire a producer was driven by the desire to reduce stress and allow for creative freedom.
“We did the last two records ourselves,” says Cannon. “Doing it yourself is cool, but it is so much work. You’re wearing two hats. You finish recording and you go right behind the board. There’s no breaks. It was always just a headache. After a couple of records, we all went, ‘Let’s get a producer, man, and take a break from this.’ It’s a lot less stressful to have someone there helping you — another mind, outside of the band.”
The new album, “Whomp Whack Thunder”, features 11 tracks, all written by Cannon. The band’s approach to songwriting is spontaneous, with Cannon emphasizing the importance of letting ideas flow naturally. “It’s better if I don’t think,” Cannon explains. “I’ve never come up with, like, a preconceived sound or an idea. That doesn’t work for me. It has to be, purely, like coming through, out of the sky.”
The first single from the album, “Time Bomb”, released in April, exemplifies the band’s energetic and freewheeling style. The tour, “What We Were Born to Do Tour”, includes notable opening acts such as Wade Bowen, Charles Wesley Godwin, and Kashus Culpepper. The band’s influence extends beyond their own success, as they have helped elevate other acts like Shane Smith and the Saints and Southall.
Whiskey Myers’ journey from independent success to arena headliners is a testament to their dedication and the support of their fans. As they continue to tour and release new music, the band remains committed to their roots and their unique sound.
