Polícia investiga incêndio suspeito no Museu Afro-Americano de Boston

A polícia de Boston e autoridades federais investigam um possível ato de incêndio criminoso no Museum of African American History, em Boston, após um pacote com materiais para a celebração de Juneteenth ter sido incendiado do lado de fora da instituição.
O incidente ocorreu por volta das oito da manhã de quarta-feira, no African Meeting House, em Beacon Hill, e câmeras de segurança mostraram um homem abrindo o pacote, espalhando parte do conteúdo e ateando fogo em itens no beco aos fundos do prédio.
Segundo a presidente e CEO do museu, Noelle Trent, o pacote continha materiais destinados à celebração de Juneteenth.
A investigação é realizada pela Polícia de Boston, em parceria com o National Park Service, com o apoio de grupos de direitos civis para identificar possível motivação por viés. Ainda não houve classificação do caso como crime de ódio.
A polícia divulgou imagens de um suspeito, descrito como homem branco, vestindo jaqueta escura, calça escura e tênis brancos, e pediu ajuda ao público para identificação.

Police and federal authorities are investigating a suspected arson at the Museum of African American History in Boston, where a package containing Juneteenth materials was set on fire outside the institution this week. The incident occurred around 8 am on Wednesday at the African Meeting House site on Beacon Hill.

Security footage shows a man opening the package, dispersing some of its contents, and igniting items in an alley behind the building. The materials were intended for the museum’s upcoming Juneteenth celebration, according to museum president and CEO Noelle Trent.

Authorities delay classification of the case as a hate crime, though the context and target have raised concerns for officials. The Boston Police Department, the National Park Service and civil rights groups are collaborating to identify a possible bias motive.

Investigators released images of a suspect described as a white man wearing a dark jacket, dark pants and white sneakers, and are asking the public for help in the identification. The museum site includes the African Meeting House, the oldest surviving Black church building in the United States, and the adjacent Abiel Smith School.
