Polish jets intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Thursday, after the plane approached Polish airspace. The incident was confirmed by the Polish army.
The military said the fighter jets visually identified and escorted the Russian aircraft from their area of responsibility. The event occurred in international waters, with security concerns tied to recent airspace incursions by Russian planes in the region.
Observations later indicated that at night objects entered Polish airspace from Belarus. The army said these were most likely smuggling balloons moving with wind patterns, and part of northeast Podlaskie airspace was temporarily closed to civilian traffic.
