Greenland should hold talks with the US directly, without Denmark, according to a Greenlandic opposition leader. The statement comes as Greenland weighs how to respond to President Trump’s renewed push to bring the island under US control. The leader argues Denmark’s mediation worsens tensions with both Greenland and Washington.

Pele Broberg, head of Naleraq, said the Greenlandic government should pursue dialogue with the US government directly. Naleraq won eight seats in last year’s election, aiming for rapid independence. The party supports a defence agreement with Washington and a possible free association arrangement.

Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory with its own parliament and government, but Copenhagen handles foreign affairs and defence. Broberg’s call highlights a split within Greenland over how to reach independence and manage relations with the US and Denmark.

Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, said direct talks with the US without Denmark are not legally possible. She emphasized the need to respect Kingdom law and established procedures for resolving issues.

Ahead of a planned meeting between Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, officials stressed the importance of a stable relationship with Washington. Motzfeldt underscored the goal of normalising ties.

In Washington, Vice President JD Vance stated the US will defend American interests, remarks that align with some administration voices open to strong action. The US position on a potential military option remains under discussion within the administration.
