Arab leaders, during a summit in Cairo, endorsed Egypt’s postwar plan for the Gaza Strip, which aims to allow the region’s 2 million Palestinians to remain, countering U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to depopulate the area. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi announced the endorsement, which signifies a collective rejection of Trump’s plan. The summit included key figures such as the emir of Qatar and the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, whose support is vital for any reconstruction efforts. El-Sissi emphasized that the plan “preserves the right of Palestinian people in rebuilding their nation.”

The endorsed plan, valued at $53 billion, outlines a comprehensive strategy for Gaza’s reconstruction by 2030, without displacing its population. It includes the removal of unexploded ordnance and clearing over 50 million tons of rubble from previous conflicts. The final communique from the summit called for the UN Security Council to deploy an international peacekeeping force in Gaza and the West Bank, reinforcing the Arab leaders’ commitment to a peaceful resolution. El-Sissi highlighted the need for a “comprehensive, just and lasting settlement” to the Palestinian cause.

In contrast, Israel has been pursuing an alternative U.S. proposal that links a ceasefire to the release of hostages taken by Hamas during its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel’s blockade of essential supplies to Gaza has drawn criticism from human rights groups, who argue it violates international law. The new proposal requires Hamas to release half of its remaining hostages in exchange for a ceasefire extension, while Israel has not indicated any willingness to release Palestinian prisoners.

Meanwhile, Hamas has accepted the Arab League’s reconstruction proposal, which includes the establishment of a committee to oversee governance in Gaza. The group expressed its commitment to the plan, emphasizing the need for adequate resources to ensure its success. This development marks a significant shift in the dynamics of the region, as Arab leaders seek to present a unified front in support of Palestinian rights and reconstruction efforts following the ongoing conflict.
